2020 Season - The Count of Monte Cristo Character Breakdown

 

Edmond Dantès/ The Count of Monte Cristo: Male, 25+. Bari-tenor, A to A. All Ethnicities. Leading Man with a pop/rock sensibility. Character ages from 25 to 45 years old. Most of role lives in the older age listed.

Born Edmond Dantès, The Count of Monte Cristo will use this alias in his pursuit of revenge on his enemies; he is twenty-five years old and naive at the beginning of the story and will be betrayed by his enemies, Mondego, Danglars, and Villefort; he will be forced to spend 18 years of his life in prison; when he finally escapes, Edmond is a new man, set on vengeance, who will systematically punish each one of the people he considers evil

 

Mercedes: Female, 22-30+. All Ethnicities. Vocally must have a HUGE Belt sound and a palette of pop colors to employ. Belt/mix from G to E. Character ages from 17 to 37. Most of role lives in the older age of the character.

Originally a 22-year-old Catalan and Dantès’ fiancée at the beginning of the story, she will be an unwilling dupe in Dantès’ betrayal and will eventually marry Mondego, one of Dantès’ childhood friends and betrayers whose actions are prompted by his desire to have her.

 

Mondego: Male 25+. Vocally a high baritone, A to G#. All Ethnicities. Character ages from mid 20s to mid 40’s. Most of role lives in the older age of the character.

Originally a 25 + year-old Catalan in love with Mercedes, he will conspire with Danglars to denounce Dantès as a traitor to the Republic in order to gain Mercedes' love for himself; he will eventually marry Mercedes and become a rich Count in Paris, but will grow bored and abusive of Mercedes.

 

Abbé Faria: Male 45+. Vocally a Baritone to F#. All Ethnicities

He becomes Edmond Dantès' friend while they are in prison; a comic; he will teach Dantès about God, providence, patience, education and learning, hope and strength; he will serve as Dantès' major inspiration and will influence the man that Dantès will become; although he dies in prison, he tells Dantès where to find a magnificent treasure, hidden on the Island of Monte Cristo.

 

Louis Dantès: Male 40+. Vocally Baritone, B to D#. All Ethnicities.

Dantès' father, he will die in poverty soon after Dantès is imprisoned.

 

Danglars: Male 25+. Vocally a bari/tenor - A flat to G. All Ethnicities. Character ages from mid 20s to mid 40s. Most of the role lives in the older age of the character.

Originally the Ship’s Purser on the same ship as Dantès. His jealousy of Dantès' sudden good fortune and rise in position will prompt him to entice Mondego to join him in framing Dantès as a traitor to the Republic. He is a man without scruples capable of the darkest deeds.

 

Villefort: Male, 25+. Vocally, a Javert-type with a darker tone but a strong upper register from B flat to G (optional B flat). All Ethnicities. Character ages from mid 20s to mid 40s. Most of the role lives in the older age of the character.

A staunch royalist, and a public prosecutor with heavy ambitions at the outset of the story, when he is about 27 years of age; he will betray Edmond and have him thrown in jail in order to secure his own ambition: to be a prosecutor and magistrate.

 

Louisa Vampa: Female, 25+. Vocally B flat to F#. African American, Latinx, Asian preferred — but considering all ethnicities.

The leader of the Italian bandits, she is a friend of the Count of Monte Cristo; among other things she helps him win Albert's favor by capturing him at the Count's wishes; a sexy pirate queen; a great fighter.

 

Jacopo: Male, 25+. Vocally a Tenor with a range from C# to A — emphasis on Acting. All Ethnicities. Prototype: Luis Guzman.

The smuggler who saves Dantès from the sea; he recovers the treasure with Dantès; Jacopo later becomes Dantès'/Monte Cristo's manservant and friend; must be a great fighter.

 

M. Morrel: Male, 40+. Vocally a Baritone with a range from B to F. All Ethnicities.

Dantès' employer and the owner of the Pharaon; he has a thriving shipping business called "Morrel & Son" at the beginning of the story, but over the course of the years he will become ruined. He is one of the "good" characters in the story, he will be rewarded for his friendship and goodness by Dantès.

 

Albert Mondego: Male, 18+. Vocally a Tenor or Baritone to an E. All Ethnicities.

Age 18. The son of Mercedes and Edmond, but raised by Mondego. Through his friendship with Monte Cristo and his discovery of the betrayals of his father, he and his mother will set out to make a new name for themselves free from the taint of his Mondego’s past.

 

Male Ensemble: Male, 22+. All ethnicities.

Must be excellent singers AND strong dancers. who are virile and versatile actors; will play a variety of characters (prisoners, pirates, party guests, soldiers, guards) ‚— stage fighting a plus.

 

Female Ensemble: Female, 22+. All ethnicities.

Must be excellent singers and strong dancers as well as versatile actors; will play a variety of characters (pirates, party guests, etc.).
